Course Dates
Course DescriptionThis training course provides the student with a basic understanding of concepts in batteries selection certification for spaceflight applications with an emphasis on human spaceflight. The participant will belcome familiar with basic electrochemical equations, principles and reactions that describe battery cell behavior. The participant will also learn about the various types of cells, cell chemistries and battery configurations. In addition the course will cover battery hazard controls, safety features and test methods for spaceflight qualification and acceptance. The course has been developed to assist the particpant in improving the safe design and handling of their battery systems. The basic concepts and principles of battery safety are provoded to give the participant a working knowledge of their uses and how they are accomplished in practice. Practical exercises worked by the participants in groups are used to develop skills in practical and analytical techniques. This course establishes a foundation for the participant to pursue more advanced studies of battery safety in spaceflight applications. Purpose of the CourseThe primary purpose of the course is to introduce the concepts of space battery safety and to provide an overview of the safety issues associated with spaceflight battery technology with the purpose of instilling in engineers and managers the benefits that the application of safe practices provides and the knowledge to implement them. Learning by DoingFollowing the detailed instructor led briefings the participants are encouraged to complete practical exercises illustrating spaceflight battery safety & test engineering techniques that help embed the knowledge provided during the course. . Who Should Attend this Course? The course is designed for engineers, designers, technicians, and program/project management personnel, as well as safety, reliability, quality, maintainability and graduate students who desire a basic understanding of Battery Safety for spaceflight to apply to current and future projects. Course Instructors:Dr. Judith A. JeevarajanDr. J. Jeevarajan, has worked as a civil servant at NASA-Johnson Space Center in the capacity of Senior Scientist since November, 2003. Before that, she performed the same duties as a contractor, working for Lockheed Martin Space Operations at NASA-JSC. She has a M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame ('91) and graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemistry (Electrochemistry) from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1995. After a short period of work for a small business company, she worked for a year as a post-doctoral fellow at Texas A&M University on NASA projects, that was immediately followed by her being hired on by Lockheed Martin Space Operations in Houston. She has 10 years of battery experience with her main focus being li-ion cell and battery research. Dr. Jeevarajan represents the battery group at all the NASA safety panels, which involves working with the International Partners. She presents papers every year and has served as an invited speaker and/or Session Chair at well-recognized conferences such as The Electrochemical Society, The Power Sources Conference, The Space Power Workshop, The Payload Safety Conference, The International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety, The IECEC, The AIAA and The NASA Battery Workshop. Dr. Jeevarajan is listed in a few of the Marquis Who's Whos of which "International Who's Who of Professional Women in Science and Engineering" are "Who's Who of American Women" are two of them. Dr. Jeevarajan has about 33 paper presentations on battery performance and safety to her credit. Paul D. KirkpatrickPaul Kirkpatrick works for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA. Mr. Kirkpatrick has worked at KSC for 20 years after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. During his time at KSC, he worked with the Space Shuttle at Launch Complex 39B and performing Solid Rocket Booster retrieval operations. Subsequent to those activities, he became a Payload Safety Engineer (PSE) in support of the Shuttle/Station Ground Safety Review Panel. He served as the Lead Ground PSE for significant major payloads such as the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite, all three Space Radar Missions, Chandra X-Ray Telescope and the first five ISS assembly missions as well as Mars Pathfinder and Deep Space-1. Mr. Kirkpatrick is currently the Chairman of the Ground Safety Review Panel. Paul continued his Coast Guard career, retiring for the Reserve in 2002. Mr. Kirkpatrick is also the Chairman of the Technical Training Committee with the IAASS. Paul has received numerous awards included the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the Silver Snoopy. Who are the IAASS?The International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to furthering international cooperation and scientific advancement in the field of space systems safety. In October 2004 IAASS became member of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). For more information please visit www.iaass.org. The philosophy of the IAASS is best summed up in the following: "Over the long run the safety of all human beings in the global commons of space is a responsibility that must be shared by all space-faring powers" (G. Rodney, NASA Associated Administrator S&MA 40th IAF Congress, October 1989, Beijing - China)
