New GPS Training Courses for 2008

Space Industry Skillnet offers courses with GPS Ireland - leading providers of GPS training in Europe

Introduction

Space Industry Skillnet in association with GPS Ireland is proud to present series of training courses in 2008 covering all the topics required for people who use GPS as part of their work. It is a unique opportunity to recieve instruction in this critical topic from the leading GPS experts. The good news for 2008 is that the courses will be run both in the Midlands Innovation and Research Centre (MIRC) in Athlone as well as in National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) in Cork.

Course Outline

These courses provide instruction in the fundamentals of operating and using GPS equipment effectively in a range of application environments. The courses establish a foundation for the participant to pursue more advanced studies of GPS and Navigation/Mapping techniques while allowing participants to effectively apply their skills to straightforward practical assignments. Course Descriptions:

Handheld GPS Course: Garmin, MLR, Magellan etc.,

Venue: NMCI Cork - 12th Feb 2008, MIRC Athlone - 11th March

A must for all corporate & state employees who are required to to use a handheld GPS as part of their field operations. Designed to ensure best accuracy and best practice for users of Garmin, Magellan and MLR receivers. This course will be run 9 times between Cork and Athlone in 2008.

Linking GPS Data To GIS & Mapping Software

Venue : NMCI Cork - 13th Feb 2008, MIRC Athlone -12th March 2008

Offered as a follow on course for attendees of the Handheld GPS Course above or as a Stanalone Cousre for those familiar with GPS. This course takes students through the process of taking GPS related data and handling it in Popular GIS and Mapping Software packages. Garmin MapSource, Fugwai, GPSI Hangle and ESRI ArcGIS, MapInfo and Manifold will all be covered by guided exercises and students will opt for which GIS package they wish to focus on. The purpose of this course will be to show students how to make and present map detail in GIS packages.

GPS For Asset Management & Data Capture

Venue: NMCI Cork - 4th & 5th March 2008, MIRC Athlone - 15th & 16th May 2008

This course has been designed due to demand from GIS Managers and Asset Managers in Private & Public Organisations. Specifically aimed at those in the Water, Telecoms, Electricity and Gas industries, this course empowers managers in these areas to make decisions with respect to GPS capabilities and requirements for their own needs. Covering equipment types and options, accuracy and Differential GPS Capabilities, DGPS services available in Ireland and detailed GIS and practical GPS skills;- the course is ideal for those recently appointed to GIS Manager or Asset Management roles or those just requiring a course to suit their Continuous Professional Development (CPD) needs. Anyone who will be making decsions with respect to the purchase of GPS equipment for asset management should attend this course. All of Trimble, Magellan and Garmin GPS receivers will be used in the course in conjunction with ArcGIS, MapInfo and Manifold GIS software packages.

GPS for Land Surveying Course :

Venue: MIRC Athlone 26th, 27th & 28th March 2008, NMCI Cork - 23rd,24th & 25th April 2008

Run 4 times in 2007 and now extended to 2.5 Days in 2008. This course is designed to provide theoretical and practical knowhow to anyone using or planning to use dual frequency GPS for Surveying purposes. The course will be held over a two and half day period mixing classroom, software and practical field work sessions and covering, coordinates systems, ellipsoidal and orthometric heights, Kinematic and faststatic surveying, post processing for control work, setting out (stakeout), control and use of radios for RTK (including ComReg regulations), use of OSI active and passive station data, use of OSI GSM & GPRS VRS service (UK & Irl SmartNet Service), network adjustments and more. A comprehensive set of notes will be provided to all students.

Learning by Doing

Following the detailed instructor led briefings the participants are encouraged to complete practical exercises in the use of GPS systems in a series of supervised exercises to help embed the knowledge provided during the course.

Course Instructor: Gary Delaney

Gary Delaney Lt NS (Ret’d), MSc (Nav Tech), FRIN, MNI. is the Managing Director of GPS Ireland and has 20 years experience as a Naval Officer and is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation. Gary provides GPS training, technical support and professional GPS project management consultancy to private and public sector organisations in Ireland and internationally.
